Bring Black history to life through the lens of Jazz.
Seattle JazzED’s Black History Month In-School Assemblies bring professional musicians and educators directly to your school for an interactive exploration of jazz as a vital Black American art form.
Through live performance, storytelling, musical demonstrations, and student participation, students explore the people, history, creativity, and cultural traditions that shaped jazz. They will also discover how its influence continues throughout American music today.
This assembly is a live, interactive jazz experience for grades K-12 across the greater Puget Sound region and is only available during the month of February.
February 2027 assembly dates are limited and schools are encouraged to inquire early.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
JazzED Black History Month Assembly is a 45-minute live, in-person assembly
Professional JazzED musicians and educators bring the experience directly to the school
Designed for grades K–12, with content and student engagement adapted for elementary, middle, and high school audiences.
Interactive experience incorporating live music, demonstrations, storytelling, improvisation, and student participation
JazzED will provide all necessary assembly equipment and materials
K–12 EXPERIENCE
Elementary | K–5
Students discover jazz through sound, movement, stories, and participation, exploring instruments, rhythm, improvisation, and influential Black musicians while learning about jazz’s roots as a Black American art form.
Middle School | Grades 6–8
Students explore jazz through history, creativity, and self-expression, discovering how improvisation, collaboration, and musical innovation connect Black American history with the music and culture around them today.
High School | Grades 9–12
Students engage more deeply with jazz as music, history, and cultural expression, exploring how Black artists used innovation, improvisation, identity, and community to shape an art form that transformed American music and continues to influence contemporary culture.
PROGRAM COSTS
The standard fee for this event is $1,000.
Cost should not prevent a school from participating. As with all Seattle JazzED programming, this amount is adjustable via our sliding scale program.
Seattle JazzED is committed to making our Black History Month Assemblies accessible to schools across our community. If the standard assembly fee is beyond your school’s available resources, please tell us what your school is able to contribute on the inquiry form.
Partial and fully sponsored assemblies are available, with priority given to Title I schools and schools serving communities with limited access to arts education.
No assembly budget? Please still inquire. A lack of available funds does not automatically prevent your school from participating.
