Every musician starts somewhere. The Foundations pathway helps beginning musicians in grades 4 through 8 build confidence, develop strong musical fundamentals, and prepare to play alongside others in a jazz ensemble.
Whether your student is picking up an instrument for the first time, picking up where summer camp left off, or needs a refresher, there’s a place for them here.
CLASSES
Foundations: Instrument Fundamentals
Build strong musical foundations.
This is a 10-week beginning instrumental class for students who are new to their instrument, or who want more time to build the skills that make ensemble playing possible. Students grow their confidence through instrument technique, tone, rhythm, note reading, and the basics of playing with others.
This class will begin in Winter Quarter, January 2027.
Foundations: Jazz Fundamentals
Build skills to play in your first ensemble.
This is a 10-week class for students with some beginning instrumental experience who are ready to go deeper. Students will explore improvisation, listening, rhythm, harmony, lead sheets, and ensemble playing, all while continuing to strengthen their instrumental skills.
Students can enter Foundations: Jazz Fundamentals after attending Foundations Summer Camp, or if they have equivalent beginning experience.
This class will begin in Fall Quarter, October 2026.
