JAZZ PREP ENSEMBLES FOR BEGINNERS // Grades 4-8
OCTOBER 2019 - MAY 2020

Have you dabbled in church music, piano lessons, or drumming?  Do you love to sing? In a Jazz Prep Ensemble you will learn how to play an instrument or sing, perform, read music and set yourself up for a life of musical success.  You choose from flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, upright bass, guitar, drums, piano or vocals. Tuition is sliding scale, free instrument loans available. No prior experience required, beginners welcome!

ALL-STAR COMBOS // Grades 6-12
OCTOBER 2019 - MAY 2020
Hone your theory and improvisation in a combo! You'll rehearse twice a month with your own dedicated coach. We highly recommend combo play to fully develop your skills and creative voice. High-schoolers who meet requirements can be added to our professional combo gig pool. All instruments welcome.

GIRLS JAZZ DAY // Grades 6-12
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2019

One awesome day. 100% dedicated to girls who are dedicated to music. You’ll make friends, connect with awesome female role models, and come away inspired to keep improving and developing your musical voice and ideas. Become more confident when taking a solo. You'll learn the basics and then build on them in a supportive atmosphere. Improv takes courage, but the process doesn't have to be mysterious or scary - and we’ll help you! Our mantra is “Brave, not perfect”. All instruments and vocals, welcome.

COLLEGE SUMMIT + AUDITION WORKSHOP // Grades 9-12
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2019
Ace your college music audition! Meet with reps from local, regional and national music schools. Learn how to set yourself apart from the competition, prepare for recorded and live auditions, and select the school that's right for you. This one-day event includes the college audition workshop and designated times to visit each college or university’s table and representatives to make contacts and gather information.

BIG BAND ENSEMBLES // Grades 5-12, with at least one year experience
JANUARY - MAY 2020

Play and perform under legendary local educators, alongside dedicated students from Seattle and beyond. Although most of the instrumental ensembles are traditional jazz big bands, we are proud to offer opportunities to students on any instrument in the New Works Ensemble and JazzED Youth Orchestra (see below). Top ensembles travel to NYC in the spring. Ensemble placement: November 16-17, 2019.

NEW WORKS ENSEMBLE // Grades 9-12
JANUARY - MAY 2020
The high level, award-winning New Works Ensemble organizes high school students into a group that explores the boundaries of jazz and welcomes instrumentation not traditionally part of jazz performance. This ensemble travels to NYC in the spring. Ensemble placement: November 16-17, 2019.

JAZZED DRUMLINE PROJECT // Grades 7-12, with at least one year of drumming experience
JANUARY - MAY 2020
You’ll be a part of building a groove-based, second line style, funky drumline directed by Tony Sodano (assistant director of the Seahawks Blue Thunder Drumline). Ensemble placement: November 16-17, 2019.

NINA SIMONE VOCAL ENSEMBLE // Grades 7-12

Explore the crossroads of America’s roots music by learning jazz through a gospel lense. (It's not just for girls; boys welcome!) Ensemble placement: November 16-17, 2019.

GIRLS ELLINGTON PROJECT // Grades 9-12, female (and female-identified) instrumentalists
Directed by Kelly Clingan, The Girls Ellington Project is Seattle’s all-girls, all-city jazz band. The band submits an audition recording to the Essentially Ellington Festival with the goal of being a finalist and participating in the festival in New York City in May. Placement is by audition.

Drop into a free jam session at The Royal Room. Beginners and advanced players welcome. Every youth jam session is curated by the JazzED House Band, a house band made up of professional musicians and educators.
