  • Vehicles may unload in the loading zones on Mercer St. After equipment is unloaded, buses may leave to park in bus parking near Memorial Stadium. (drive East on Mercer, turn right (South) on 4th and park in front of McCaw Hall)

Open to middle and high school drumlines. The time limit per show is 7 minutes. There will be point deductions for performance time past this limit.

$250 - Financial aid is available to any school that needs it. Don’t let the fee keep your school from signing up. Your fee covers new 20 minute educational clinic, venue costs, staff time, videographer and trophies. Additionally, we’re no longer charging a ticket fee for audience members. If the fee is prohibitive to you, please email Tony Sodano and we’ll figure out what works for your budget.


  • BDX 2019 will end with a performance from the Seahawks Blue Thunder Drumline. This is traditionally the first full group performance of the season for Blue Thunder.

  • Food and drink will be sold in the venue lobby. Cash, check and card accepted. All proceeds from food, drink & merch go directly to the Seattle JazzED Scholarship fund.

  • Look for an email from JazzED staff regarding updated parking instructions based on our new location at the Cornish Playhouse.

BDX Director


Tony Sodano received his Master's degree in Music Education from Washington State University as a multi-instrumentalist focusing on electric bass, percussion and guitar. During his studies, he composed for and instructed the Washington State University Marching Band Drumline. After receiving his Master's, Tony spent two years working with Celebrity Cruises playing bass in their show band around the world. As the former band director at Garfield High School, he ran the marching and concert bands along with the award winning drumline program. He is the assistant director of the Seahawks Blue Thunder Drumline and has performed with Kenny Aronoff, David Garibaldi, Alan White, Scott Mercado, Owuor Arunga, Michael Derosier, Scott Rockenfield, Ryan Lewis & Macklemore.

BDX Clinicians


Britt Dahlgren started her percussion career in southern California, where she marched within the WGI, SCPA, and DCI circuits. She moved to Washington to pursue her percussion career at Central Washington University, where she received two Bachelors and a Masters in Music. After college, she began performing with various ensembles, including Cascade Symphony, Cascade Percussion Ensemble, South Sound Symphonic Band, and Tacoma Concert Band. She is currently a substitute teacher in Puyallup, Percussion Caption Head at Cedarcrest High School, and Bass Drum Tech at Columbians Drum & Bugle Corps.


Liz Harris Scruggs received her bachelors in music education from the University of Washington in 2016.  While there she played in the Husky Marching Band on snare drum and played percussion with the UW Wind Ensemble, traveling to China 3 times between both groups to tour and play music.  She has played in the Sounder's band, Soundwave, for a total of four years and has done one year in Blue Thunder playing snare in both groups.  She is currently teaching elementary instrumental music in Seattle and playing with her all women group, Femcorps, as well as with Soundwave. She enjoys any opportunity to work with students and to play music outside!


Ronnie la Grone is a freelance percussion instructor, percussion arranger, percussion consultant, and adjudicator throughout the northwest and all over the country. He served in the capacities as consultant, percussion arranger, and caption head of percussion with the award-winning Westview High School Percussion Ensemble, Sunset High School, and the award-winning Oregon Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps, the Colt Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps from Dubuque, IA, and the Cascades Drum and Bugle Corps. He has also worked with groups such as Grenada High School, Tupelo High School, Vicksburg High School, Southridge High School, the University of Mississippi Drumline, The Northern Lights Summer Marching Band, and Oregon State University Percussion. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1995 from the University of Mississippi where he majored in Percussion Performance and attended the University of Oregon Graduate School. Ron plays professionally in the Portland metro area and is the director of instrumental music at Rosemont Ridge Middle School in West Linn, OR. Ronnie is a Dynasty, REMO, LP, and PROMARK artist.


Chris Patin is a locally raised Seattle musician who began honeing his musical craft at the legendary jazz programs at both Washington Middle School and Garfield High School. He we attended Hampton University in Virginia on music scholarship where he continued his formal music education in music performance emphasized on jazz. He also played snare drum in the Hampton University Drum line and learned the musical style and flair of the historically black college's and universities in the MEAC Mid Eastern Athletic Conference. He them became a touring jazz muscian and eventually settled back in the Seattle area where he continued to play and teach music in the Seattle area. He was the co-founder and musical director of the award winning Pacific Northwest Drumline in South Seattle. Chris continues to perform with countless wonderful local Seattle artists in various genres and teaches youth in private and group settings often.


Kevin Tsai was born and raised in Naperville, Illinois where he was introduced to drums in the 4th grade. Since then he's gone to perform with many marching ensembles including Great Lakes Percussion, Purdue University Marching Band, Northcoast Academy, Chicago Bulls Stampede Drumline and Seattle Seahawks Blue Thunder Drumline. Today, Kevin continues to write, instruct and clinic for various groups and students in the Seattle area.


David Vaughns has been continually involved in the Marching Arts for over 30 years primarily in the Pacific Northwest. He has been a member, instructor, & clinician of many successful NW programs including (defunct) Marauders Drum & Bugle Corps, Seattle Cascades, Cadets of Bergen County (NJ), Seattle Imperials, Oregon Crusaders. Including dozens of high school programs in Western Washington - Tahoma, Issaquah, Snohomish, Cascade, Kamiak, Auburn, Liberty, Mariner, Burlington-Edison, Sedro Woolley, Mount Vernon, Bellingham, and over a decade as Percussion Caption Head in the Ferndale Schools. Currently he is in his twelfth year serving as Percussion Instructor of Meridian H.S. (N. Bellingham) and all Bellingham area Middle Schools (Fairhaven, Shuksan, Kulshan, Whatcom).
